Beyonce’s ‘Homecoming’ Leads in First Round of Cinema Eye Honors Documentary Nominations - Yahoo Entertainment

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 02:30 PM PDT

Beyonce's "Homecoming" has landed three nominations to lead all films in the first round of noms for the Cinema Eye Honors, a New York-based awards ceremony established in 2007 to honor all aspects of nonfiction filmmaking.

In an announcement made at a luncheon in downtown Los Angeles, Cinema Eye Honors organizers unveiled nominations in seven categories, including new categories for broadcast editing and cinematography. "Homecoming" received nominations in both those new categories, as well as for the outstanding broadcast film of the year.

It faces off in that last category against "Apollo: Mission to the Moon," "At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal," "Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists," "Leaving Neverland" and "The Sentence."

Other shows with multiple nominations were the broadcast series "Salt Fat Acid Heat" and "Tricky Dick," which received two each.

Cinema Eye also revealed the nominees in its Heterodox category, which honors films that blur the line between fiction and documentary. Mati Diop's "Atlantics," which won the Grand Prix in Cannes and is now competing in the Oscars international race, was a nominee, along with Alma Har'el's "Honey Boy," Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra's "The Infiltrators," Joanna Hogg's "The Souvenir" and Pedro Costa's "Vitalina Varela."

Godfrey Reggio's "Koyaanisqatsi" will receive the Legacy Award, which puts it on a Cinema Eye honor roll of influential nonfiction films.

That list includes Dr. Ruth Westheimer ("Ask Dr. Ruth"), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ("Knock Down the House"), sailor Tracy Edwards ("Maiden") and Chelsea Manning ("XY Chelsea").

The bulk of the Cinema Eye Honors nominations will be announced on Nov. 7, and the awards will be handed out at the 13th Cinema Eye Honors ceremony on Jan. 6 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York.

Shaq On Being A Regular Guy, Rihanna, Beyonce And Giannis - Forbes

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 11:30 AM PDT

Ten minutes with Shaquille O'Neal is equal to an hour with other people in terms of both fun and being memorable. On opening night of the NBA season this past Tuesday I met up with Shaq after a free kickoff show featuring Halsey that American Express put on at L.A. Live.

Multiple times, as the always strong Halsey performed against an impressive production of pyrotechnics and confetti, Shaq walked through the crowd, a wall of purple as the crowd gasped and stopped him for pictures.

When we net upstairs in the makeshift Inside The NBA greenroom well wishers came by to pay their respects and say hello. It's keeping with Shaq's mantra he is a regular guy, just a regular guy with giant zest for life and fun.

At one point as we are talking he notices the Led Zeppelin Vans I am wearing. "Those are funky shoes, can I take a picture of them?" he asks.

When I explain that I am friends with the GM of Vans North America and he sent me the shoes, Shaq says, "See if he can make me 100 pairs of 22s? I'm serious, and I'll pay for them. Those are funky as hell."

Not every celebrity knows how to enjoy their fame. Shaq does. And it makes him a joy to be around. I don't like or watch reality TV, but a show centering on Shaq's adventures might lead me to make an exception. He is so nonchalant about everything.

Take when he tells the story about getting Beyonce to invite his daughter on stage to wish her a happy birthday he credits Am Ex and says it's because he had "points." So when I ask the Am Ex reps how many points you need to get Beyonce to invite you on stage, they laugh and say, "A Shaq amount of points."

I spoke with Shaq about the mix of music and basketball, being a regular guy, all the concerts he has seen and those he still hasn't (Rihanna and Beyonce top the list) and his predictions for the NBA season.

Steve Baltin: As you're watching Halsey do you now approach it from the mindset of a DJ and think about potential collaborations and remixes?

Shaquille O'Neal: I just gave her manager a song that I remixed of hers. So it's good to be in this business. It's good for American Express to integrate music and basketball; it's part of our culture, it's part of everybody's culture. Am Ex has always done it right. But every time I see somebody I like I usually get their permission to do a remix or I just do it and send it to them.

Baltin: Who are your dream artists to have at all-star weekend as a fan?

Shaq: I've never seen Rihanna perform. I would love to see Rihanna perform. I've never seen Beyonce perform. I called her one time and asked her for tickets for my daughter. She called my daughter onstage. Am Ex hooked that up. She called my daughter onstage and wished her a happy birthday. Those are the only two. I've seen everybody else. I'm 47; I've seen all the rappers, saw Madonna, she was great; Prince was awesome, Michael [Jackson] in London was crazy. He did something I've never seen before. He came out and didn't say nothing. Every time he looked at a part of the crowd they all jumped.

Baltin: When you have a kid you are just mom or dad and they don't care how famous you are. But I am going to bet you got a lot of cool points for getting Beyonce to wish your daughter a happy birthday onstage.

Shaq: Not really (laughs). They used their once a year power points, only score them once a year. I called [my contact at] Am Ex and he said, "Guess what, you got so many points racked up on your card you don't have to pay for it anyway." When I first got the black credit card I didn't read anything, I just wanted the card. But I've been a card member since '92. I got so many points it's crazy. I've been racking up points since '92. I got the black card in '96. I never used them for anything. I didn't even know what they were.

Baltin: I remember talking to someone about it, can't remember who the artist was though, who only impressed their kid when they got to meet Hannah Montana.

Shaq: For me it was the Teletubbies. The Teletubbies was big, got to go backstage.

Baltin: You've been racking up points since '92. What do you use all those points on besides your daughter meeting Beyonce?

Shaq: They took me to the U.S. Open, I liked that. So I'm gonna use some for the U.S. Open, I'd like to go back to Wimbledon and then I'm gonna probably use my points to go to a place I really want to go, it's far, but every time I look at the pictures I gotta go there — the Maldives. The only thing is it's like a 36-hour flight, so next time I get eight days I'm not doing anything I'm gonna have to call them up and say, "Get me to the Maldives."

Baltin: When did you ever have eight days you weren't doing anything?

Shaq: Not in a while.

Baltin: Do you play tennis?

Shaq: No, but my favorite is [Novak] Djokovic

Baltin: What are your NBA predictions this year?

Shaq: Lakers versus Milwaukee Bucks in the finals. I'm saying that because right now, on paper, Lakers have the best team, most exciting team. And Milwaukee has a guy that doesn't want to work out with people, he wants his respect. He's tired of people saying LeBron James and he wants his turn. I know how that feeling was because when I came in all I heard was Chuck [Charles Barkley], Magic [Johnson], Michael [Jordan] and it got to a point for me, "I don't care about those guys, the league is mine." And I think Giannis [Anteokounmpo] is at that point. I say Milwaukee in the east and LeBron and A.D. [Anthony Davis] in the west.

Baltin: You say you got to that point. I think every successful person is always trying to better themselves. It's not about others, it's competing to be the best, regardless of what you are doing. Have you found that?

Shaq: What inspires me the most is criticism. When I was a rapper, "Oh, you're just a basketball player, you're not that good." Now you gotta step up and show people. Same thing with DJing. When I first started doing it people didn't realize I'd been doing it since '88. That's cause I never showed it. But now all of a sudden I'm a celebrity DJ. You have to work your way up and I don't mind working. So criticism fuels me, makes me very upset. My thing is if I'm not really good at something I won't show the world that I'm doing it.

Baltin: But you don't see that from the outside as it looks like you are just having fun, like that video of you moshing in the crowd recently.

Shaq: I'm a regular person, I like to have fun, do regular things. I don't have bodyguards, I don't have an entourage, I got one credit card, American Express, and I like to do regular people stuff. I go to restaurants, I go to movies, I go on dates. I'm just a regular guy.
